Classical Dressage

Training according to the Dressage masters; for the health of the horse

First days as a working student

I arrived in San Francisco by airplane and had to take the bus there. I drove through San Francisco, WOW, I already love it! Have to visit that city properly soon!

It is incredible beautiful in California around Healdsburg! It reminds me of the Vogeze Mountains in France. The mountains are not to high, they seem old to me. Spring is just starting and some of the trees are blossoming pink. The grass is already very green (I had almost forgotten what that looks like) and the daisies welcome me every morning when I walk to the stables. It smells great, just like spring is supposed to. The vineyards are very common here; I am looking forward to the time when everything is really lush!

The weather is still kind of boring but not as cold as in WV. They say it will be sunny in a few days again, can’t wait!

At the moment we are with two students. We start the day with feeding. After feeding, we will clean the bridles that have been used the day before. Then the horses are being exercised. I just started doing that today, the second day, under supervision. I got a lesson in lunging. Tomorrow I probably start lunging myself as well. Ones we, the students, start settling in, we get our ‘own’ horses to exercise every day. The horses that don’t get exercised get some turn out. But the goal is lunging every day for every horse.

The students get a mounted lesson every day. I’ve had two lessons so far and I really LOVE it! There are quite some things different in Classic Dressage from ‘modern’ dressage, things that I have been taught ones in the ‘regular’ riding schools, which I now have to forget again. I don’t mind because those are things I never really felt comfortable with anyway! And learning it the ‘right’ way, that is why I came to Barbierfarm for in the first place!

The horses are beautiful. Most of them Lusitano stallions, some crosses (Lusitano-TB) and there are a few other breeds. The stables and the riding arena are beautiful too, but that is to expect from people who perform an art like Classical Dressage :-)

Ones I feel a bit more comfortable, I will write about the first differences between Classical Dressage and ‘modern’ Dressage I have come across here, so come back soon!
